Tourists can take boat rides along the deep blue lake and learn about how the area's pristine landscape served as a memorable backdrops for such movies as Dirty Dancing, Last of the Mohicans, Firestarter, Thunder Road, and A Breed Apart.
Dirty Dancing (1987) Although the summer romance between Johnny and Baby, in the 1987 summer hit Dirty Dancing, was set in New York, much of the movie was filmed in Lake Lure and locations in the nearby town of Asheville. The footbridge and what is remaining of the film's camp buildings can be found about 1/2 mile from the Four Seasons Cottages. For directions to these Dirty Dancing scene locations by land, take Boys Camp Road and turn right on Chapel Point Road. The stars of the movie, Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey stayed at the Lake Lure Inn and Spa while filming Dirty Dancing, which is the setting for Kellerman's Resort in the famous film.
Last of the Mohicans (1992) Lake Lure's heavenly blue lakes and sparkling waterfalls offers a memorable backdrop for most of the 1992 epic adventure film, Last of the Mohicans, starring Daniel Day-Lewis and Madeleine Stowe. The final 17 minutes of the movie includes a dramatic fight scene that was filmed on top of Hickory Nut Falls. Throughout the movie, you will recognize the beauty of Chimney Rock Park and Hickory Nut Gorge.
A Breed Apart (1984) A Breed Apart is a nature film, starring Kathleen Turner, Rutger Hauer, and Powers Boothe, about a recluse motivated to protect a nest of eagles. The nature scenes were filmed throughout trails, wooded areas, and the rocky ledges of Chimney Rock Park. Kathleen Turner's store is set at the Dam Marina where Hwy 64/74A and Buffalo Shoals Road intersect. Powers Booth rock climbs both Chimney Rock and Hickory Nut Falls. Lastly, Rutger Hauer maintains a sharp eye on an eagle's nest located at Exclamation Point.
Thunder Road (1954) Thunder Road is a 1954 film, starring Robert Mitchum, that dramatizing the running of moonshine through the Mountains of Tennessee and Kentucky. Actor, Robert Mitchum's character, often ate at Log Shop, a prominent restaurant and gift shop located at Lake Lure. Today the Log Shop is a historical Lake Lure building that is now the home the Point of View Restaurant.
Firestarter (1984) Firestarter is a 1984 Stephen King thriller depicting the struggles of young Charlene "Charlie" MacGee, played by Drew Barrymore, who possesses amazing abilities, such as pyrokinesis. The small cottage where Charlie's father, played by David Keith, fights with the kidnappers can been seen by boat from Sunset Cove. You will also notice the stone gates and bridge found at the main entrance to Chimney Rock Park in the movie, Firestarter.
My Fellow Americans (1996) My Fellow Americans is a 1996 flick starring Jack Lemon and James Garner as two former presidents on the run from people trying to kidnap them. The two movie characters stroll down a path that runs through Morse Park and parallels with the Rocky Broad River as it flows into Lake Lure. |
